Good children’s books will stand the test of time and entertain both children and adults. Numerous studies have shown that early reading leads to a lifetime of learning and love for literature. The best children’s authors are able to combine imaginative plots and spark curiosity. While it’s hard to list every good children’s authors; this is an overview of classic and current authors.
Margret and H.A. Rey, authors of the iconic Curious George series. This series follows a mischievous little monkey and his escapades. Children delight in reading all of the naughty things George does, because he does things they may not be able to do. In each book, actions and their consequences are taught. Judy Blume’s books are geared toward the pre-teen and teen age group. Blume wrote about topics that were not often talked about; menstruation, racism, religion and divorce. Blume is able to write about these themes in a gentle way while showing the character’s fight with emotions.
Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote The Little House on The Prairie series. While her books are fictional, they are based on her life. The series follows a small girl into womanhood as she grows up in the pioneering lifestyle. Children will be transported back in history and learn more about early America.
