Although many new children’s books are published every year, some children’s books remain instructive and relevant through each generation. Here are five classic choices that will delight any child:

Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson

Armed with only a purple crayon, Harold goes sailing and battles monsters in an adventure that teaches kids just how far their imaginations can take them.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

Eric Carle’s collage illustrations provide a textured and colorful world for children to explore while they follow the life cycle of a caterpillar and learn the days of the week.

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst

Any cranky kid will relate to the plight of Alexander and his terrible day, but this story will show kids that even the worst days will end.

Strega Nona by Tomie dePaola

Strega Nona’s hapless assistant learns an important lesson about obedience in this hilarious and magical tale.

The Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown

This beautifully illustrated tale shows the depth of a mother bunny’s love as she follows her little bunny through field, stream, and air to bring him home.

There are more children’s books out on the market than there are grains of sand on a beach, but in order to give your child the best experience you need to know what to look for and that means doing a little bit of research on the side. Especially if you don’t want to end up declaring bankruptcy from buying so many books at one time.

For starters, you are going to want to consult the critics. There are a wide number of critics who can all give you the professional appraisal you seek but the final verdict should ultimately fall on you. You are your child’s parent and you get to decide what is best for them. Once you have an idea what book or books might be best for your child, seek them out in a book store and actually read them. You don’t have to read the whole thing, just maybe the first five or ten pages. Get an idea for the book and where it’s going.

Finally, make sure the book is teaching something you want your child to know. Far too often parents will turn a blind eye to potentially offensive or objectionable material under some excuse like “oh it’s just a silly kid story.” WRONG. Children are very impressionable and the last thing you need is them absorbing the wrong kind of messages.

Literacy is arguably the most important aspects of education. The absolute best way to encourage a child to be a life long reader is to instill a love of reading early in life. Experts encourage parents to read to their babies as early as when they are in the womb.
For older children who are just beginning to learn to read, fun activities that correspond with the literature can make all the difference. Parents and teachers can ensure that children will enjoy themselves while reading if they just get a little creative.
Learning activities that compliment children-s literature do not have to be intricate or involved. Simply encouraging the child to draw a picture of what they think the main character looks like, while you read the story is a great activity that encourages listening and creativity. After the adult reads the story the child can compare their drawing to the illustrations. Then, if the child is capable, they can reread the story and look at the pictures.
Children love role-playing. Assigning different characters to children and asking them to act out the story is a great way to gauge understanding and encourage listening.
These are just a couple of simple ways to help make children-s literature fun and help turn young readers into life long readers.Keep looking, there-s more: The Ipswich Festival of Children’s Literature 3 -14 Sept 2011

We all want our children to enjoy reading and love literature. Although it can sometimes be quite harrowing to find appropriate material for our teens to read. Many individuals feel that many of the classics are too gritty or explicit for younger readers. Others feel that whatever the level of questionable material is in the classic works, these are invaluable in the development of sound, responsible adults.

There are some science fiction and fantasy/adventure novels that are well worth the purchase if one is serious about getting and keeping their teens reading. What many parents may run into is a plethora of research literature that really does not enumerate many titles or authors that would be appropriate for their teens. Many times the popular media and even the literary listings have given up on the idea of getting teenagers reading.

Although, there are many titles that are worth the time. Take for instance the book, A Wrinkle In Time. This has been a classic book that has captivated and entertained many generations of pre teens and teens. The series of books by JRR Tolkien are also a great place to look if one is seeking fantasy and adventure all rolled up into one great volume.

There is somethng about thethrill of having your parent read a bedtime story to yu as you doze off to sleep. While many children would love to sit up and watch tv or play video games long into the night, the best thing a parent can do for them is read one of the classic children’s bedtime stories to help them get to sleep.

Fun furry character sparade through their minds as they drift off. Try the Ugly Duckling or maybe even the Boy Who Cried Wolf to help them get to sleep. The Ant and The Grasshopper and The Hare and The Tortoise are also great stories that have a purpose that children will love to hear again and again.I was looking for more information and found it here.

The Three Little Pigs and Red Riding Hood will also delight your children for many years to come. No matter what piece of classic literature is chosen the child in your life will love the opportunity to sit and listen to yoou read them. The quality time will be double with the fact that time is taken to bond and enjoy a good story before bed. Your child will love it, and the memories you build together will be irreplaceable.
